ABSTRACT

Objective:To explore the relationship between empathy, professional values and nursing ability of nurses in geriatric hospital, and to explore the mediating effect of empathy between professional values and clinical nursing ability of geriatric nurses. Methods:This study was a cross-sectional survey. In June 2022, 401 nurses from Beijing Geriatric Hospital were investigated by general data questionnaire, the Nursing Professional Values Scale, the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professional and the Geriatric Nursing Competence Scale, and the mediation effect of empathy was analyzed by sequential inspection method. Results:The score of the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professional was (114.25 ± 16.70) points, the score of the Nursing Professional Values Scale was (100.83 ± 17.76) points, the score of the Geriatric Nursing Competence Scale was (2.15 ± 0.76) points. Empathy was positively correlated with professional value and geriatric nursing ability ( r=0.456, 0.386, both P<0.01), while professional value was positively correlated with geriatric nursing ability ( r=0.421, P<0.01). In addition, empathy played a partial mediating effect between professional values and geriatric nursing ability, accounting for 27.78% of the total effect. Conclusions:This research shows that the nurses' empathy, professional value, geriatric nursing ability have significant positive correlation, and empathy between professional value and geriatric nursing ability play a partial intermediary role. It is suggested that managers should promote the cultivation of empathy and positive professional values of geriatric nurses through diversified training and perfect incentive measures, so as to stimulate work enthusiasm and improve the overall geriatric nursing ability.

ABSTRACT

By quoting the learning process proposed in The Book of Rites·The Doctrine of the Mean:"studying extensively, enquiring accurately, reflecting carefully, discriminating clearly, practicing earnestly",this paper con-structed the "Five - step" model in the moral and values education of college students, and also applied it to medi-cal students' professional values education. This method can guide students to study extensively and accumulate knowledge, ask in detail and explore carefully, think thoughtfully and accept actively, embed knowledge and judge rationally, devote oneself to practice and make the unity of knowing and doing,so as to achieve the purpose of "em-bedding within the heart and practicing outside the action in line" in the values education during the process of gradual progress and continuous circulation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Occupational physicians (OPs) have complex relationships with employees, employers, and the general public. OPs may have simultaneous obligations towards third parties, which can lead to variable conflicts of interests. Among the various studies of ethical issues related to OPs, few have focused on the Korean OPs. The aim of the present survey was to investigate the ethical contexts, the practical resolutions, and the ethical principles for the Korean OPs. METHODS: An email with a self-administered questionnaire was sent to members of the Korean Society of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, comprising 150 specialists and 130 residents. The questionnaire was also distributed to 52 specialists and 46 residents who attended the annual meeting of the Korean Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics in October 2015, and to 240 specialists by uploading the questionnaire to the online community ‘oem-doctors’ in February 2016. The responses to each question (perception of general ethical conflicts, recognition of various ethical codes for OPs, core professional values in ethics of occupational medicine, and a mock case study) were compared between specialists and residents by the chi-squared test and Fisher’s exact test. RESULTS: Responses were received from 80 specialists and 71 residents. Most participants had experienced ethical conflicts at work and felt the need for systematic education and training. OPs suffered the most ethical conflicts in decisions regarding occupational health examination and evaluation for work relatedness. Over 60% of total participants were unaware of the ethical codes of other countries. Participants thought ‘consideration of worker’s health and safety’ (26.0%) and ‘neutrality’ (24.7%) as the prominent ethical values in professionality ofoccupational medicine. In mock cases, participants chose beneficence and justice for fitness for work and confidential information acquired while on duty, and beneficence and respect for autonomy in pre-placement examinations. CONCLUSIONS: This study evaluated the current perception of and attitude toward ethical issues among the Korean OPs. These findings will facilitate the development of a code of ethics and the ethical decision-making program forthe Korean OPs. ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure nursing professional values. METHOD: Forty preliminary items were selected by classifying 223 basic items extracted via a literature study and in-depth interviews of subjects and testing the relevance of their contents. In order to verify the reliability and relevance of the preliminary instrument, data was collected from 504 nurses in 3 general hospitals. RESULT: As a result of the item analysis, 29 items were selected from a total of 40 items. Five factors were extracted by factor analysis, and the total variance was 51.5%. For the explanation of variances by factors, the 1st factor, 'self-concept of the profession' accounted for 14.8%, the 2nd factor, 'social awareness' 12.1%, the 3rd factor, 'professionalism of nursing' 9.8%, the 4th factor, 'the roles of nursing service' 9.1%, and the 5th factor, 'originality of nursing', 5.6%. Cronbach's Alpha of those 29 items was .9168, which was high. CONCLUSION: This paper is meaningful in a way that it developed a tool capable of measuring nursing professional values, which reflects the characteristics of our country. In order to re-verify the relevance and stability of this tool, it is necessary that comparative studies should be conducted.
